The free summit is for female-identified high school and college students of color and this year鈥檚 featured theme is, Ladies First: reSIStance and Revolution.

鈥淲e want the young ladies in attendance to know they have the power within them to resist any limitations placed on them by society and they can evolve into anything they want to be,鈥� said Tanisha Williams, co-chair of the Y.E.L.L. Female Summit planning committee.

Williams continued: 鈥淭he young women can expect to be in a safe space full of other young women that look like them, and be inspired, motivated, and empowered by presenters that also look like them 鈥� we hope they feel the energy, love, and intention that went into planning this event for them.鈥�

Being the 10 year anniversary of the summit, this year is extra-special and the milestone is being marked with a new Y.E.L.L. Female Summit Scholarship through the 新加坡六合彩开奖 Foundation. According to Gerie Ventura, Y.E.L.L. planning committee member, the Y.E.L.L. They are ready and willing to participate fully and that’s why I love serving on this committee,鈥� she said.

鈥淲e are celebrating 10 years of this signature event for black and brown young women and I am most proud about the vision of the summit reaching this level of accomplishment,鈥� said Rashad Norris, co-founder and former community engagement director.

Last year鈥檚 recipient was Josias Jean-Pierre, motivational speaker and five-time author. He was recognized for his involvement in the college’s annual Black and Brown Male Summit, leading workshops with young men of color.

The two students and other top scholars from the state鈥檚 34 community and technical colleges will be recognized during the April 25 at South Puget Sound Community College.

Grace Thykkuttathil

Grace Thykkuttathil, a 17-year-old Federal Way resident, will be graduating with an associate degree this summer. They attend both high school and college through Highline’s . Upon graduation, Thykkuttathil intends to transfer to the University of Washington to pursue a bachelor鈥檚 degree in communications.

Thykkuttathil says they鈥檙e looking to 鈥渕ake the world a better place鈥� especially in the face of setbacks. They refer to the impact of the pandemic and how they were affected by the isolation caused by the shutdown, especially at a time when they were diagnosed with ADD and having to learn new coping skills.

鈥淚 was unable to nurture friendships as I had in the past or build new relationships with peers while being so isolated,鈥� they said.

Seeing how others at school were facing similar challenges, Thykkuttathil implemented and reworked the buddy system to check on each other even while physically apart. According to Thykkuttathil, the program was so successful it continues to this day.

Previously, Thykkuttathil had faced adversity as a seventh grader when a very close friend outed them as queer to the school. Ultimately, Thykkuttathil was able to transform their experience into an empowering one and it even became a source of inspiration as to why they鈥檙e now looking to obtain a law degree.

鈥淚 am deeply passionate about social justice and advancing the rights of the disenfranchised. As a BIPOC, queer, neurodivergent youth, I have first-hand experience with the ways that minority groups are systemically harmed in our local community鈥�, they said.

Further to this, during their sophomore year Thykkuttathil initiated a group at their school called the Gay-Straight Alliance. The aim of the group was to create a safe, supportive space for other queer teens experiencing harmful language being directed at them.

Thykkuttathil’s ultimate goal is to extend their impact by supporting diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

Maureen Ondatto

Seatac resident, Maureen Ondatto, is studying full-time at 新加坡六合彩开奖 to achieve an associate degree in pre-nursing. Ondatto鈥檚 determination to succeed is fueled by her experience in coming to the US, from Africa, to pursue her education.

The 45-year-old says the experience hasn鈥檛 been easy, financially or emotionally, but that it has made her stronger and more resilient as she works towards giving her family a stable future.

Her decision to transfer to the University of Washington and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is deeply rooted in her passion for healthcare and her desire to make a meaningful difference in people鈥檚 lives. She aspires to work in various healthcare settings, where she can offer holistic and patient-centered care.

Ondatto reflects that racial disparities are evident in healthcare and she aims to advocate for equitable healthcare practices, so that all patients receive the same standard of care 鈥� especially those from marginalized communities.

She sees systematic racism as being the most significant issue affecting her community. Its far-reaching impact needs a holistic approach, she says, with education being at the heart of the solution.

鈥淲e need to create an educational environment where open conversations about racial issues are encouraged, challenging biases and prejudices that persist,鈥� she declared.

Mental health is another area that Ondatto is interested in, demonstrated by her work within the TRiO program at 新加坡六合彩开奖. There, she initiated campaigns to grow awareness of mental health challenges for students who are low-income, undocumented or with disabilities. Ondatto says the group was able to reduce stigma and provide essential support.

Looking to the future, Ondatto hopes to obtain a doctorate and continue her path into healthcare.

Students can use this space and its resources to support their academic and social activities. With designated areas for studying and hosting club meetings, along with access to a printer and both standard and ADA-compliant computers, the center accommodates various needs.

Additionally, amenities such as a fridge, coffee, microwave and water dispenser are available and snacks are provided weekly by the .

The purpose of this space is to 鈥渉elp welcome [student veterans] back and help them understand that 新加坡六合彩开奖cares.鈥� Evans said.

Most importantly, students can engage with a tight-knit community that understands them best.

鈥淚鈥檓 a veteran and 鈥榶ou can鈥檛 understand me鈥� is this belief that goes on in our head because you haven鈥檛 had this same experience,鈥� said Evans. 鈥淲ell, the people that this space is made for have that experience and can share that like-minded experience鈥nd work with each other to get through those dark periods of time.鈥�

Evans explained how challenging it was to leave the military and enter higher education. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 until I reconnected with veterans that I saw new possibilities and most of that occurred while I was a student at Highline.鈥� It鈥檚 spaces like these that help encourage student veterans to succeed.

The development and funding process for the Veterans Resource Center involved creative approaches.

Late last year, minor renovations were underway in Building 23 to support development plans for the campus. These pre-existing projects provided the groundwork for the Veterans Resource Center to seamlessly repurpose and revitalize one of the unused rooms during updates. Changes to the space included the installation of LED lighting, replacing carpeting, adding a whiteboard, and implementing a large monitor with a video conferencing system.

In 2023, King County Councilmember, Dave Upthegrove and Major Pete Von Reichbauer (Ret.) from the Veterans Service Organizations Grant Program provided $10,000 to support veterans programs at 新加坡六合彩开奖.

Applications typically open in October for students wanting to start college the next fall but improvements to the FAFSA process have caused a slight delay in the application鈥檚 availability.

The significantly changes how eligibility for federal student aid is determined. FAFSA鈥檚 new Student Aid Index is intended to reflect students鈥� costs and financial need more accurately. The U.S. Dept. of Education predicts that more people will be eligible for Pell Grants and that the average Pell award amount will increase. Pell Grants provide low-income undergraduate students with money for college that, unlike student loans, doesn鈥檛 have to be paid back.

The new law also aims to make the FAFSA application shorter and less complex. Fewer questions will be on the form, and people filling out the form will only see and respond to questions relevant to their specific role 鈥� for example, as a student or as a parent. With a direct connection to the IRS, families won鈥檛 need to enter income information manually; but tax filing isn鈥檛 required, so non-filers can still apply.

In Washington, there are two ways to apply for financial aid. U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens apply for federal and state aid with the . This year, a family of four making up to $112,500 can qualify for grant aid in Washington. People who can’t file the FAFSA due to immigration status can apply only for state aid with the (WASFA). Because it is based on the FAFSA, it will also be shorter and more simple.
